Yoon Hyup

Born in South Korea in 1982, currently works and lives in New York.

Yoon Hyup is a self-taught painter and has been working since early 2000 with murals and live paintings. In his work, Yoon freely uses lines and dots to draw a minimalistic landscape from a unique perspective. Components of various cultures, he has experienced, are strongly reflected in his works.

Hyup sees his artistic process analogous to jazz music improvisation. It is a flowing trial, in which some tones fit better than others. However, nothing is wrong and it is fully focused on creating a piece on any particular moment. No worries about the past or future, only the present rhythms count. As improvising jazz is a musical interplay of notes, artist Yoon Hyup’s art can be explained as a creative interplay of music, paint, colors and cities. Hyup himself likes to view it as ‘creating his own world’. A world in which colors can be out of balance, just as musical notes can be in jazz.

Hyup also explores the city on a skateboard, making his experience of it uniquely tactile. He says, “When I skate, I feel rhythm. I feel like I become a flowing water that never stops.” On a similar wavelength, his own experiences of the city and the streets often become inspiration. The rhythm and improvisation in music, the flexibility and radical perspective in street culture are some of the creative inputs that transform into lines, dots, “rhythms” and colors in his works. A combination of these elements powers the creation of unique abstract paintings.
