Jean Jullien

Born in France in 1983.

Jean Jullien studied in London, graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2008, and gaining a Master’s from the Royal College of Art in 2010. Working as an illustrator and providing works to various clients including the New York Times, National Geographic, RCA Records, Le Center Pompidou, Hermès, Petit Bateau, and Vogue, Jullien has also actively engaged in the production of paintings, holding exhibitions throughout the world such as San Francisco, London, Berlin, and the PARCO Museum in Shibuya, Tokyo.

Deeply rooted in French poster art from the 1950s, Julien uses such visual language as commentaries on daily occurrences, with expressionist aesthetics that transcends the form beyond commercialism. Julien aims to communicate not only a visceral reaction but also lasting mental cues that bear a place with the viewers in their daily lives. One epitome of Julien’s work is no other than the “Peace for Paris” symbol in 2015.

Jullien himself also mentions having received inspiration from various Japanese comics like Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, Dragon Ball, and City Hunter, Franco-Belgian comics referred to as Bandes dessinées, as well as figures such as French poster artist Raymond Savignac, children’s book illustrator Tomi Ungerer, and illustrator and cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé. His works, respond to this world with a rich sense of wit, can indeed be regarded as a manifestation of the artist’s creativity that is not bound to fine art, but has been naturally cultivated through his encounter with a wide range of cultures.
