AISHONANZUKA is pleased to announce solo exhibition of new works by Keiichi Tanaami.

Keiichi Tanaami was born in Tokyo in 1936 and graduated from Musashino Art University. A one of a kind artist active since the 1960s as a graphic designer and illustrator, Tanaami is an artist who does not heed the boundaries of media and genre but instead traverses them.
During the ´60s, Tanaami contributed works that played a significant role in the introduction of pop art and psychedelic culture into Japan, designing album jackets for the Japanese releases of legendary rock bands The Monkees´ Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd (1967), Jefferson Airplane´s After Bathing at Baxter´s (1967), and he became the art director of a monthly magazine PLAYBOY in 1975, thus he has been producing significant works contributing pop art and psychedelic culture to Japan.
The evaluation of his activities are rising day by day indicated by the large scale exhibitions at museums in the world. As the major exhibitions in 2013: solo exhibitions NO MORE WAR (Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, Germany), and KILLER JOE’S 1965 – 1975 (Foundation Speerstra, Apple, Switzerland); the group exhibitions Ausweitung der Kampfzone: Die Sammlung 1968 – 2000 (Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, Germany), NOW JAPAN (Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort, The Netherlands), KABOON! (Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen, Germany) and so on.

This exhibition will present two serial new paintings created in recent years.
The first series is the paintings based on the original drawings of his animation in ‘70s, themed as Marilyn Monroe, John & Yoko, and etc., that implicates his baptism by pop art in ‘60s, and the influence by the animators such as Osamu Tezuka and Walt Disney who he admires since his childhood. Especially, the repetitions of the images involved in this series associate with the timescales of the animations, reinforcing its’ uniqueness.
The second series is the distinctive paintings represent his 70 year-long personal history, namely is his autobiographical mandala. These works contain, for example, many motifs drawn from Tanaami´s childhood experience of war. Glowing grotesque creatures are personifications of bombs and the light from their explosions. Beams of light stretching outward recall the searchlights of Japanese troops keeping watch for American bomber planes. Skeletal monsters that appear in his works represent both those injured in the war as well as our selves, unaware of the true horrors of war. Goldfish-like characters also often appear in Tanami´s work. This motif is deeply tied to a scene from Tanaami´s memory etched permanently in his mind -- the image of light from the bombs reflecting off the scales of his grandfather´s goldfish.

The opening reception with artists in attendance will take place on 15 May 2014 from 17:00 – 20:00, during ART BASEL HONG KONG 2014 is open, as a joint reception with galleries located in Aberdeen in Hong Kong.




此次，AishoNanzuka畫廊將呈獻田名網敬一首次於香港的個人新作展覽。

田名網敬一出生於1936年日本東京。武藏野美術大學設計系畢業。1960年研究媒體並且橫斷了整個體系界線 ，田名網從未能停留在美術指導，廣告繪畫等平面設計的體系圈內。而是涉足於動畫，實驗影片，乃至於繪畫，雕塑作品等廣泛領域之中。他是一位以當代應變藝術家之形象，給予了世間年輕藝術家們巨大的影響。60年代，田名網為傳說中的搖滾樂隊“The Monkees”的《Pisces,Aquarius,Capricorn & Jones Ltd》(1967)專輯與，"Jefferson Airplane"的《After Bathing At Baxters》（1967）年的日本版專輯制作封面。1975年起，開始從事於月刊《PLAYBOY》雜誌的藝術總監等，為波普藝術（pop-art）以及迷幻文化（psychedelic culture）引進日本而流下了重要的作品。其作品之評價也是日趨高升。去年2013年於美術館所舉辦的重要展覽會有：個人展《No More War》(Schinkel Pavillon、柏林、2013)、個人展《KILLER JOE'S (1965-1975)》(Fondation Speerstra、apple2013)、群展《Ausweitung der Kampfzone: Die Sammlung 1968 - 2000》(柏林新國立美術館 、2013)、《NOW JAPAN》（Kunsthal KAdE、Amsfort、2013)、《KABOON!》（Neues Museum Weserburg）等等，現在田名網的作品被世界各地的美術館以及畫廊所發表。

本展覽將發表田名網的最新繪畫作品，這些是由近幾年積蓄制作的2個系列所構成。第1個系列是，基於田名網70年代初的動畫作品原畫所做成的。那是由夢露（Marilyn Monroe），約翰(John Lennon)與洋子（Yoko）等主題所制成，可從中看出田名網受到了來自襲於60年代波普文化的洗禮與幼年時期的偶像手塚治蟲，迪斯尼等動畫藝術家的影響。特別是因為在動畫中攝取了反復使人聯想到時間軸的影像，使這些毫不列外的成為了田名網的獨特作品。此外，另一個系列則是近幾年來十分具有特征性的畫布(canvas)作品。本系列可稱之為’曼陀羅圖“般集聚了田名網生平經歷的作品。這裏集聚了許多可以聯想至田名網幼年期所經歷的戰爭主題。放著光的奇特生物，被擬人化的炸彈與彈光。其中那筆直的光線，就是探索美軍戰鬥飛機的探照燈。出現在畫面中那骷髏形象的怪物們就是因戰爭而受傷的人們，同時也是還不知恐懼的我們自身。金魚的形象也在畫中多次的出現。這是與被深刻印在田名網腦海中的原風景（祖父所養的金魚的魚鱗因美軍投下的炸彈烈光，而引起的亂反射情景）有著深切的聯系。

與ART BASEL HONG KONG時期的香港仔地區畫廊共同舉辦開幕酒會。

このたび、AishoNanzuka は、香港では初となる田名網敬一の新作個展を開催いたします。

田名網敬一は、1936年東京生まれ。武蔵野美術大学デザイン科卒。1960年代からメディアやジャンルの境界を横断して、アートディレクション、イラストレーションといったグラフィックデザインの枠に留まらず、アニメーション、実験映画そして絵画、彫刻作品まで幅広く手掛け、現代の可変的なアーティスト像の先駆者として世界中の若いアーティストたちに大きな影響を与えているアーティストです。60年代には、伝説的ロックバンド「モンキーズ」の『Pisces,Aquarius,Capricorn & Jones Ltd』 （1967）や、「ジェファーソン・エアプレイン」の『After Bathing At Baxters』（1967）の日本版アルバムジャケットを制作。1975年より月刊「PLAYBOY」マガジンのアートディレクターを努めるなど、ポップアート及びサイケデリックカルチャーの日本への導入に重要な作品を残しています。その評価は、日に日に高まっており、昨年2013年の主要な美術館の展覧会として、個展「No More War」(Schinkel Pavillon、ベルリン、2013)、個展「KILLER JOE'S (1965-1975)」(Fondation Speerstra、apple、2013)、グループ展「Ausweitung der Kampfzone: Die Sammlung 1968 - 2000」(ベルリン新国立美術館
、2013)、「NOW JAPAN」（Kunsthal KAdE、Amsfort、2013)、「KABOON!」（Neues Museum Weserburg）など、現在では世界中の美術館、ギャラリーでその作品が発表されています。

本展では、田名網が近年描きためた２つのシリーズによる新作ペインティングを発表いたします。１つは、７０年代初めに田名網が制作したアニメーションの原画を基にした新作ペインティングです。マリリンモンロー、ジョン＆ヨーコなどの題材を基に描かれた作品は、田名網が６０年代に触れたポップアートの洗礼と幼少期から憧れていた手塚治虫やディズニーなどアニメーションアーティストからの影響が見て取れます。特にアニメーションにおける時間軸を連想させるイメージの”繰り返し”を取り入れている点で、また田名網独自のユニークな作品となっております。また、もう一つのシリーズは、近年の田名網の特徴的なキャンバス作品です。本シリーズは、田名網の生きた歴史を記したいわば"曼荼羅図”的な作品です。例えば、ここには田名網が幼少期に経験した戦争を連想するモチーフが幾多に込められています。光を放つ奇怪な生き物は、擬人化した爆弾と爆発の光。縦に伸びるビーム光は、アメリカの爆撃機を探す日本軍の放つサーチライト。画面中に登場する骸骨姿のモンスターたちは、戦争で傷ついた人々であり、同時に恐れを知らぬ私たち自身の姿でもあります。金魚をモチーフにしたキャラクターも多数登場します。これは田名網の脳裏に深く刻まれている原風景 - 祖父が飼っていた金魚の鱗にアメリカの落とした爆弾の光が乱反射する光景 -と深く関係しています。

本展のオープニングレセプションは、５月１５日（木）１７：００−２０：００、ART BASEL HONG KONGの期間中にアバディーン地区ギャラリーの合同オープニングとして開催されます。田名網も本展のオープニングのために香港に来る予定となっております。

Keiichi Tanaami

Born 1936, Tokyo. Graduated Musashino Art University college of design. Worked as Art Director for Monthly Playboy magazine starting in 1975. Currently working as a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design since 1991. Continues to create an inexhaustible array of works including paintings, sculpture, and animation, exhibits at galleries and museums around the world, has works housed at Hamburger Bahnof in Berlin, and boasts an international reputation that receives increasing acclaim every year. Recent major exhibitions include solo exhibition Wandering in the Chaos – the Dreamland of Keiichi Tanaami (The OCT Art & Design Gallery, Shennan, China, 2010), international exhibition Yokohama Triennale (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2011), solo exhibition Drawings and Collages 1967-1975 (Galerie Gebr. Lehmann, Berlin, 2011), solo exhibition Dividing Bridge (NANZUKA, 2011), solo exhibition No More War (Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, 2013), and film screening Japanese Underground Cinema Program 6: Radical Experiments in Japanese Animation (MoMA, NY, 2013), solo exhibition KILLER JOE'S (NANZUKA and Fondation Speerstra, Appel Swiss, 2013),among many others. Recent major publications include Daydream (Graphic-Sha, 2007), A Portrait of Keiichi Tanaami: 14 Films 1975-2009 (CaRTe bLaNChe, France, 2010), WERK No. 18 Keiichi Tanaami Psychedelic Visual Master (WERK, Singapore, 2011), Stranger Than Phantom (Little More, coauthored with Hiroshi Morinaga, 2011), and Killer Joe’s (contrarede, 2013). Tanaami’s works have appeared in magazine features and on the covers for Wallpaper (2007), WeAr (2008), Hot Rod (2008), and Dazed & Confused (2010). Numerous collaborations with fashion brands include a 2008 collaboration with Manish Arora for the Paris collection, a 2011 collaboration with Lucien Pellat-Finet, and a 2013 collaboration with Stussy.
